News to start your week!

There have been a number of articles lately about the canon and the so-called “Invisible Hand” that dictates what art is preserved and celebrated.  Read Harvard Musicologist Anne Shreffler’s thoughts here,  and also a response to Shreffler’s work by composer Jon Silpayamanant here.

The Washington Post profiles Missy Mazzoli, and explore her work as a “leading composer of her generation.”  Read on here.

Conductor Susanna Mälkki is profiled in the Los Angeles Times and specifically addresses the challenges that she has faced in her career due to her gender.  But, as principal guest conductor of the LA Philharmonic she continues to make progress for women in classical music.

The New York Times shares the story of the Académie Musicale Philippe Jaroussky and the great work being done in France to help address the problem of diversity and representation in classical music.

And congratulations to composer and conductor Tania León who was awarded a $50,000 fellowship from United States Artists!  Learn more here.

We’d love to hear about stories we’ve missed, and any ideas that you have!  [email protected]
