Sad news of the death of Ruth “Kay” Castaldo who was well known for her work directing opera. She led productions at Opera Company of Philadelphia, Cincinnati Opera, Teatro Colón, and New York City Opera. The Philadelphia Inquirer has a remembrance.
Though not related to music per se, it seems only appropriate that as we cheer on the athletes at the Rio Olympics – and being reminded of the continued biases that women face – we are also reminded of a time when women were banned from participating. In Ancient Greece women athletes took matters into their own hands and established the Heraean Games. Read more at Atlas Obscura.
