Some news stories to pay attention to as the week begins:

NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday provided a profile of the women’s barbershop society, Sweet Adelines, now celebrating its 70th year.  Read (and listen) more here.

Not classical music, but interesting nonetheless: a record store in Oregon, M’Lady’s Records, which describes itself as “radical[ly] feminist and willfully obstinate,” has instituted a new policy reflecting the pay gap.  All women who place mail orders only need to pay 77% of the list price.  NPR has the story here.

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra has hired British violinist Stephanie Gonley as their new concertmaster.

The American Composers Forum has announced the winners of the 2015 National Composition Contest.  The three winners include Nina C. Young and Alex Temple.  Runners up were Alyssa Weinberg, Katherine Young, and Tonia Ko.  Read more at NewMusicBox.
